Personal Status

There are numerous situations where evidence is required of a person's Jewish status.  The most common of these is where a person is getting married in Israel, having lived for some time outside Israel.  The Melbourne Beth Din is able to provide a certificate of single and/or Jewish status, and this certificate will be recognised anywhere in the world.  To apply for such a certificate, click here.

Please make sure the application form is completed together with the required copies of information as listed on the form, including payment for the application fee, which is $150.00 per application. We accept bank cheques, cash or direct deposit into our account (details given upon request) as well as Visa and MasterCard.

Or email/fax them with scanned copies of the documents.
Our email address is registrar @ mbd.net.au (You will have to retype this without the spaces.)

Once the information has been checked you will be contacted to make an appointment, on a Thursday afternoon, to appear before the Dayanim of the Melbourne Beth Din.

On the day of your hearing although identification was provided with the application, please bring with you

  • 2 (two) passport photographs;

  • photo identification (passport or similar),

  • the originals or notarised copies of all documents submitted with the application.

Kindly note that men should bring suitable head coverings, and ladies should be dressed modestly.

It is essential that you are accompanied to the Beth Din by two Jewish males, each unrelated to the other and each unrelated to the applicant, who will bear witness at the Beth Din that they know the applicant and that they know their status i.e. unmarried, married, divorced. The witnesses, apart from giving oral testimony, will be required to sign a Statutory Declaration supporting their testimony.

Where two people apply for these certificates together, one pair of (male) witnesses is sufficient as long as neither of them is related to each other or to either applicant and the witnesses have known both applicants for a significant period of time.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us, using the Contact Us page.
